This year I am thankful for all of my friends who have stuck with me over the last three years. Next year is going to be "my year". When I finally heed everyone's advice, and start taking care of myself. The team I have with me has got The Fridge covered, on lock. Looking forward to having time to reconnect, realign, and enjoy a little bit more.

Mural workshop with Gaia

Mural Workshop with Gaia took place on Sunday, May 1st, 2:00 - 4:00 PM at The Fridge

During this class, participants will get the chance to paint a mural with world-renowned artist Gaia. All ages and skill levels welcomed, and all materials are included for a suggested donation of $20.

Gaia's art is best known for his large scale renderings of human and animal forms, often in states of hybridization. Animals fuse with humans or other animals, blending visual characteristics and layers of spiritual and mythological relevance.

Who is[n't] Marshall Allen?

Marshall Belford Allen, alto saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and arranger, was born May 25, 1924 in Louisville, Kentucky and started clarinet lessons at age 10. At 18, he enlisted in the Army's 92nd Infantry (renowned as the Buffalo Soldiers), playing clarinet and alto saxophone in the 17th Division Special Service Band. Stationed in Paris during World War II, he played with pianist Art Simmons and saxophonist Don Byas, and he toured and recorded with James Moody during the late '40's. Upon honorable discharge, Mr. Allen enrolled in the Paris Conservatory of Music, studying clarinet with Delacluse. Returning to the States in 1951, Marshall settled in Chicago, where he led his own bands, playing in clubs and dance halls, while writing his own music and arrangements, as he continues to do today.

During the mid-'50's, Marshall met Sun Ra and became a student of his precepts. After joining the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1958, Marshall Allen led Sun Ra's formidable reed section for over 40 years (a role akin to the position of Johnny Hodges in the Duke Ellington orchestra). Marshall Allen lived, rehearsed, toured and recorded with Sun Ra almost exclusively for much of his musical career, leading the reed section during the time that the Sun Ra Arkestra won the "Downbeat" polls as number-one big band in 1988 and 1989. As a featured soloist with the Arkestra, Marshall pioneered the avante-garde jazz movement of the early '60's, expanding a style rooted in Johnny Hodges and Don Byas, and influencing all leading avante-garde saxophonists thereafter. During this time, Marshall also invented a woodwind instrument he called the "morrow," utilizing a saxophone mouthpiece attached to an open-hole wooden body. (This instrument is currently being marketed under another name, as Marshall never secured a patent on his invention).

Marshall Allen was one of the first jazz musicians to play traditional African music and what is now called "world music," working frequently with Olatunji and his Drums of Passion. In fact, Marshall is most likely the sole jazz musician who builds and plays the kora (a popular West African multi-stringed instrument), and he has been a major factor in its introduction to American audiences, as well as the world at large.

Marshall Allen is featured on over 200 Sun Ra releases, as well as appearing as special guest soloist in concert and on recordings with such diverse artists as NRBQ, Phish, Sonic Youth, Digable Planets, William Parker, Chromatic Mysteries, and Medeski, Martin & Wood.

Perhaps most significantly, Marshall Allen assumed the helm of the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1995 after the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995. Mr. Allen continues to reside at the Sun Ra Residence in Philadelphia, composing, writing and arranging for the Arkestra much like his mentor, totally committed to a life of discipline centered totally on the study, research, and further development of Sun Ra's musical precepts.

Marshall maintains the Sun Ra residence as a living museum dedicated to the compilation, restoration and preservation of Sun Ra's music, memorabilia, and artifacts. Marshall has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere "ghost" band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra's music, as well as composing new music for the Arkestra. He works unceasingly to keep the big-band tradition alive, reworking arrangements of the music of Fletcher Henderson and Jimmie Lunceford for the Arkestra to play, along with many other American standards.

Marshall Allen is recognized all over the world as the premier avant-garde saxophonist, appearing in solo concert in London in 1995, duet with Terry Adams in 1997 in Canada, and featured in articles in "JazzTimes" (12/02), "Signal to Noise" Magazine, and innumerable other music magazines and radio and TV interviews. He is frequently called upon to give master classes, lectures, and demonstrations of Sun Ra's musical precepts, and he Keeps himself accessible to all who have an interest in Sun Ra's legacy.

Marshall Allen plays the alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, oboe, kora, and E.V.I. (Electronic Valve Instrument).

Student designers at the School of Fashion Design create characters and design garments that comment on the heroes, the villains, and the stars of fashion. This project was created and facilitated by SFD instructor and the Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week, Jay Calderin. The Small Projects Program (SPP) offers quick response grants of up to $2,000 to individual artists and arts organizations. The program seeks to make grant funds more accessible for small-scale arts projects with total budget that do not exceed $4,000. Projects may include but are not limited to:

- Art presentations
- Assistance in fundraising, marketing and management
- Documentation of artistic activities through photography, brochures, portfolios and demo tapes

First of all, thanks to all for the pleasantly surprising amount of the support, encouragement, and questions about The Fridge DC.

Every time I go out or spin (which is not too often any more) I get no fewer than 10 people offer such precious nuggets of positivity ... and believe me, it is keeping me strong during some trying (and expensive) efforts in creating a place for everyone and everything; my mission for The Fridge DC.

Now that I am beginning to see some light at the end of my tunnel (renovations, business business, and government administrative business) I wanted to offer an update on progress.

I am now about four weeks away from finishing major renovations and announcing my first few events ... now is a great time to get in touch if you are interested in being a part of art, music, and performance events at The Fridge DC in 2009. my email is alex [at] thefridgedc [dot] com.

$7 gets you free food, and will pay for the cash prize for the artists.

La Vida Intensa by Gregory Ferrand

La Vida Intensa features Gregory Ferrand’s most recent works in acrylic. Ferrand’s background in film is evident in his strongly narrative paintings which usually capture a climactic moment in a character’s life. Through his exaggerated rendering and saturated colors, Ferrand aims to paint life. “No matter how exotic or mundane the setting of the painting or drawing,” says Ferrand, “I strive to tell stories about characters and situations that do, have and will exist…”

Gregory Ferrand is a native Washingtonian and self-taught painter. He received a BGS in film and English from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997, and studied drawing at Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina. La Vida Intensa is Ferrand’s first solo show. Find out more at www.gferrand.com.

Squaring the Circle; Stretching the Clay by Judit Varga

Squaring the Circle; Stretching the Clay features a selection of Judit Varga’s newest ceramic sculptures. A native of Hungary who now calls Washington, DC, “home,” Varga uses malleable clay to speak freely and engage in interactions in a place that does not understand her mother tongue. Varga’s vocabulary, she says, “has been built from basic shapes like squares, circles and their universal, symbolic implications to communicate.” Using the power of colors and the inflections of rich surfaces, Varga plays with the meaning of the spoken words and their straightforward interpretations, deliberately creating visual misinterpretation to juxtapose the lost value in translation.

Judit Varga was born and raised in Hungary, where she completed her BFA at the College of Teaching in Szombathely and her MFA at the Hungarian Applied Art Academy in Budapest. After receiving her MFA, Varga moved with her husband to Oxford, England, where she studied English and continued her clay-work for three years. In 1993, Varga made the transition to the United States, first to Long Island, NY and then finally to Rockville, MD in 1996. In 2006, Varga became a permanent resident of the U.S. and is now a working and exhibiting artist as well as a ceramics teacher.

Near death on the road to Hotel Chelsea

I was driving along at 70 or so on 95 North. Clear, sunny, warm day that was yesterday seemed to be the perfect road trip conditions until out of nowhere a very old man sideswiped my car. Thankfully my passengers Victoria and Alicia saw him obviously not looking and veering over into my lane and warned me seconds before he hit us.

My car swerved and swayed violently — plus we were surrounded on all sides by large vehicles all also traveling at 70+ — but somehow I maintained control of the car, and stopped it from spinning out, then pulled over without getting hit by any other cars.

If this guy had hit us a few inches more towards the front wheel and caused a blowout there is likely no way I could have maintained control of our car whatsoever.

When we got to our destination, the Hotel Chelsea, I was delighted to find a portrait of Sabina that I made and hung in the hallways during my last stay in August 2007 still hangs.

All's well that ends well.

According to Amazon: Originally scheduled for release in 2002, we are happy to now release a CD of previously unheard Funkadelic material. It was well worth the wait.

Recorded during the band's stay with legendary Detroit-based label, Westbound Records, the track-listing is a Funkadelic fan's delight. Four finished songs and five jams or instrumental tracks. None of these recordings are necessarily in finished form, nonetheless, despite their raw state, as historical artifacts they are nothing less than fascinating.

Detailed sleeve notes by Funkadelic expert Rob Bowman, who comments that 'the songs and the jams on this compilation provide a window into the creative energies of early 70s Funkadelic'.

UPDATED [ART] SiteProjects DC covered up my art ... with art

A few days ago I met one of the artists involved with SiteProjects DC, Michael Lease, as he was wheatpasting his installation of dozens of 11x17 photographic prints over top one of my street art pieces (a piece that has been up at 14th and T NW since the day James Brown died last year...)

Ironically, he included a photo he took of my piece as one of his images in his installation. he described that image (and one other image of one of my other 14th street art pieces) as an homage.

Guess thats cool ... but only because he was so nice about it, I guess I couldn't get too pissed. Plus he had permission to put his piece up. It came out pretty cool, actually.

Fourteenth Street NW is pretty much the District's Gallery Row. So it is curious indeed that Washington Project for the Arts..Corcoran bypassed all of its art spaces and set its new exhibition, SiteProjects DC, out in the corridor's elements -- on 14th Street's sidewalks, on the sides of its buildings and in its shops.

SiteProjects, opening today, explores the fleeting nature of the cityscape by filling it with art, and then -- like much of what has occupied 14th Street over the years -- simply disappearing.

Sixteen artists -- some tapped by independent curator Welmoed Laanstra, some chosen from entries -- have created the ephemeral site-specific sculptures, wall pastings, "graffiti" molded from moss and performances. Among their works:

· Michael Lease, "For the Lack of Words," a set of wheat-pasted photographs recalling CD release posters and concert fliers, will feature images from the community on a brick wall at 14th and T at the old Church of the Rapture.

· Elizabeth Lundberg Morisette's "Shoe Tree," a hanging installation of found objects including shoe laces, will be at Duke's Shoe Repair (the piece is being donated to the store, so it will be there indefinitely). 2000 14th St. NW.

· Live performances include "Art Services: (Waste)," in which visual and performance artist Kathryn Cornelius will take out the trash from the galleries and art spaces on the block and clean the sidewalks. It's intended to draw parallels between the lives of a working artist and a blue-collar worker. July 10-14, 5-8 p.m. daily. 14th between P and V streets.

· Beginning in mid-July, you can catch Tom Greaves's " The Compliment Machine," a cylindrical sculpture with an audio device inside that offers up praise to passersby. It will be at the Metropolis Development storefront that's become an arts hub of late. 1541 14th St. NW.

Tonight at 8, during the opening reception at the Black Cat, Laanstra will lead a tour of the sites, beginning at the Cat. The opening is 7-9 p.m. Free. 1811 14th St. NW. Renovations have begun at The Fridge!

So, although I am super pissed at Washington gASS because it has taken them two weeks to come turn my heat on (and they still aren't coming until next Monday), renovations at The Fridge are beginning to wind up.

I am really pleased that I chose to work with Mick Mier, a friend for whom I have done graphic design work in the past, because he and his associate Matt Shannon Browne are ON POINT!

I am also pleased to announce that I have hired the first employee for The Fridge, Brigador Stamback as Associate Gallery Director.

Thanks so much to everyone for your support, amazingly kind words and emails, and generous offers to volunteer. There will be opportunities after the new year, once I get over the hump with the renovation.

23 hours in NYC jail + random John Perry Barlow meeting

That was Friday. Popped for getting up.

23 hours later, I decided to cheer myself up by going to the most amazing restaurant, Blue Ribbon, where none other than one Mr. John Perry Barlow himself called me an 'incarcerated artist in America' upon overhearing my tale. He is an amazing person and writer, artist and activist, whom I have admired for decades. He was with Timothy Leary when LSD was first used, and was with Mr. Leary when passed decades later. We are friends now.

Plus booked monthly residencies, last Saturdays at Studio BPM in Brooklyn, and last Sundays at Nublu.

Still love NYC more than ever.

Shephard Fairey got up at 14th & P NW today

Apparently this is why Shephard Fairey was getting up on the outside walls at Logan Hardware earlier today. DECOY buys her paint there, and was super-fiz-gigged when she alerted me of his activities. People who work there (all DECOY fanclub members) did not know who he is, though he got permission to put these pieces up 6 months ago from the store's owner.

I first met Shephard in 1989 when he was in my friend Chase's dorm room at Parsons, visiting his pal Tony. They were making the very first 'Andre the Giant has a Posse' stickers; the ones that inspired a thousand and one bootlegs.

Shephard remembered that with me today. We chuckled. He's really nice.
